Updates

Dear Friends,

Hello from Dallas, Texas! We have really enjoyed this past furlough year—visiting many of you, and sharing in various settings how our roles fit into the Bible translation movement. Amazing events are unfolding around the world related to Bible translation. I recently read a quote by Ralph D. Winter, founder of the U.S. Center for World Mission: “Once people get the Bible in their own language you can readily expect what in most cases will be an explosive growth of faith movements to Christ.” What a privilege it is to work for an organization like Wycliffe!

Our supervisor has written a letter explaining a bit more about our part on the team. You’ll find that here below.

We are encouraged that several friends as well as the church we attended in Holland, Michigan last summer have recently committed to join us through prayer and financial support. Now we only lack $1,000 per month! Please continue to pray that God would supply a few more partners so that we can reach 100% of our budget. If you have any ideas or questions, please let us know!

Family News

José and I really miss Peru. Moving to the US has been a bigger transition than we anticipated, but God has been so good, helping us each step of the way as we learn how to live in a different country.

We are thanking the Lord for leading us to a wonderful church here on the south side of Dallas. The congregation has warmly welcomed us, and the messages each Sunday are encouraging and helping us to grow in our faith.

We had planned to home-school Laura (6 years old) but God clearly led us to enroll her in a charter school that is only a seven minute drive from where we live. Her teacher is a fellow Wycliffe missionary!

Sammy (3 years old) is thriving and such a loving boy. His friends across the street often come to play at our house and they have a grand time playing rough like typical boys.

You heard in our last update that we’re expecting another baby? Yes, we look forward to her arrival at the end of March. We’re grateful for health insurance, but it is still going to cost a lot. We’re praying for God’s provision in this too.

José is a wonderful husband and father. God could not have blessed me with a better man. He loves God, works hard, is funny and kind. He enjoys helping many of our Wycliffe neighbors with their computer needs.

With love and gratitude,

José & Lisa

Dear Friends,

It’s Thanksgiving time here in the US and we want to let you know that you are at the top of our “grateful list.” You bless us with your prayers, gifts, notes, visits, meals, and kind words.

After 14 years in Lima, Peru, where the weather was either 60° F and damp (winter) or 80° F and sunny (summer), we’re really enjoying the changing seasons here in the US. We have now been in the US for exactly a year. We thank God for His protection as we drove many miles, we thank Him for the opportunity we’ve had to visit many of you, and we thank Him for helping us get adjusted to our new home area. There are days that we really miss Peru, so this past Saturday we “had to” check out a Peruvian restaurant here in Dallas. It was very good!

We would love to hear from you. If you’re writing a Christmas letter this year, we’d love to be included on your mailing list. Our address is:

6638 Legters Dr
Dallas, TX 75236

Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

José & Lisa

Beloved Friends,

Before another day goes by, we would like to let you know that we are alive and well. We trust you are doing well too.

We are now at our destination in Dallas, Texas! We arrived at the end of August and have been working hard to get settled, adjusted, and into our routines. We only have a few more boxes to unpack, oh and a couple more trunks full of toys that we’ve put up in the attic. We’re hanging pictures and other artifacts from Peru on the walls, which is fun. I’m also enjoying the challenge of learning my way around our area here on the south side of Dallas.

It’s with much joy that we’d like to share with you that we’re expecting another baby. Hard to believe, right? Yea! We thought we were done with babies, but apparently God had a different plan! Laura (6) and Sammy (almost 3) are thrilled! We already know that we’re going to have a girl and everything indicates that she is healthy. I had a rough time with nausea and tiredness the first three months, but now I’m starting to feel much better. The due date is the end of March.

We’ve thoroughly enjoyed our time of reconnecting with so many of you and sharing about our ministry with Wycliffe. Many of you are playing a role too, whether you are praying, giving, encouraging, or serving with us. We love being a part of the Bible translation movement! We live right across the road from the International Linguistics Center, a hub for all kinds of wonderful things going on globally!

You will remember that we’ve been working to build our partnership team and our income level. We still have a bit to go before we meet our goal, but we are hopeful. We have gained a few new partners and some current partners have increased the level of their partnership. A big thank you to those of you who fall into these categories!

We praise the Lord that we are now receiving 85% of our monthly budget. We’re getting there! Do you know of a church group or anyone who might like an opportunity to be part of a ministry that will change lives forever? We are trusting God for others who will partner with us on a regular basis. Until we have commitments for 100%, Wycliffe is not able to release us to begin our next assignments. We are anxious to begin helping our colleagues in the Americas Region with their computer needs.

If you would like to join our team, please let us know. You can easily set up a gift online using the new Wycliffe.org site; click here to check that out. We appreciate all of you and look forward to seeing how God will bring us to 100%. He is leading us forward and we look ahead with confidence to all He has planned.

We send our love,

Lisa & José

Dear Family in Christ,

Our hearts are filled with gratitude as we think of you! Many of you partner with us in this ministry of Bible Translation, faithfully praying and giving. We thank you for your investment in the Kingdom of God and for the great encouragement you are to us personally!CILTA 2014 Class in Peru - South America

I (José) had a wonderful opportunity a few days ago. From our living room in Holland, Michigan, I led a two-hour class on how technology is being used in Bible translation. These 18 students in the picture are in Lima, Peru, taking a year-long course to prepare to become Bible translators and literacy specialists. They come from Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, El Salvador and Mexico! As I taught, they could see me on a large screen in their classroom.

It is such a privilege to help equip these young people who are eager to translate the Word of God for people groups in far off lands. We’re super excited to have a part in their training, and we look forward to many more such opportunities when we begin our new assignments in Dallas, Texas!

We praise the Lord that we are currently receiving 75% of the monthly budget that has been set for us. When we reach 100% Wycliffe will clear us to begin our next assignments.

Would you consider partnering with us? We would like to reach 100% within the next four weeks! We’re praying for partners who can commit to giving on a monthly basis. Our passion is to see all people have access to the Bible in a language they understand clearly so that they can have a relationship with the God that we know and worship. That is why we humbly invite you to partner with us in this exciting work. We would be honored to have you on our team.

Along with this letter you’ll receive a picture prayer card and a tear-off with information on how you can partner with us. We invite you to read it over and prayerfully consider joining us.

Again, thank you so very much for your prayers and encouragement.

Serving together,

Lisa & José

Hello dear Friends and Family! We are now in Holland, Michigan and can’t wait to catch up with those of you in this area. Please let us know when you’re available! Email is a good way to contact us. Otherwise, my (Lisa’s) cell phone number is 616-502-7254.

At the time of last month’s update we were in Orlando, Florida. From there we drove north and spent five days with my brother Miguel and his dear wife, Bethany. They have three children, very close in ages to our Laura and Sammy. Our days were full and we had lots of fun. After that we were in the Washington, DC area and in Lebanon, PA. What great visits we had with several of you. In DC we walked and walked to see the various monuments and wonderful museums. We loved it. José drove in DC and we even did the Metro a couple of times (with kids). We now feel like we can conquer any city!

Holland…this is where I was born and, yet, I’ve never lived here for more than two months at a time. It all seems vaguely familiar from visits when I was a child. My mom grew up here. Uncles, aunts and cousins still live here. We look forward to spending time with them. My mom and my brother, Tim, are buried in the cemetery here. My dad and his dear wife, Gabriela, are letting us stay in their Holland home. It’s a cozy, small, older house that is just lovely and well-located. What a blessing. We plan to be here until we move to Dallas, Texas in mid-August.

Are any of you watching the World Cup Soccer games? We’re rooting for the Netherlands and the US – of course!!! Unfortunately, Peru hasn’t had a team in the World Cup since 1982.

José and I are eager to get into our new assignments in Dallas. It will be a thrill for us to plug into the Americas Area team, providing computer support for translation teams throughout the Americas (from Alaska all the way down to Chile). I hope to participate as well – helping in whatever way I can. We are very excited about the global Bible translation movement, and being in Dallas will be awesome. We’ll be working at a large center called the International Linguistics Center (ILC). It’s where young people are trained to be Bible translators, where current translators have meetings, and where retired missionaries are now living (several who worked in Peru!). There’ll be lots of people to meet and many ways to plug into Bible translation. We plan to rent a small, furnished house right across the road from the Center.

We would covet your prayer support:

  1. Pray that José and I will be good parents for Laura and Sammy – that we point them to Christ and help them to love Him and others. They’re growing so quickly.
  2. We praise the Lord for our rising level of financial support – we’re currently receiving 73% of our monthly budget! The cost of living is quite a bit more in Dallas than it was in Peru and Wycliffe will not clear us to begin our next assignments until 100% of our monthly budget has been pledged. Making God’s Word available to people who do not have the Bible in their language is a total team effort! We are grateful that so many of you give sacrificially – not only to us but to other worthy ministries. We’re taking a step of faith and know that God can provide all we need to be able to move forward. If you would, please pray that He will call additional people and churches to partner with us on a monthly basis.

We would be happy to hear from you and to know how we can be praying for you.

We send our love,

Lisa & José
